Requirements to Obtain a Private Investigator License
THIS REPORT COVERS ALL 50 STATES AND MOST OF CANADA
During my many guest appearances on local and national radio talk shows and TV programs, I’m always asked about PI license requirements, or how to get a private investigator license. In my role as President of the Global School of Investigation since 1973, it is the most frequently asked question.
I will now give you the actual facts and full truth about who needs a license and who does not.
First, you must remember this: NO LICENSE IS REQUIRED TO
WORK AS A PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR. ANYWHERE. PERIOD.
I don’t care what any state license office tells you; THEY ARE NOT TELLING YOU THE WHOLE TRUTH. THIS IS IT.
After you have 2/3/4+ years of experience as a working private investigator and you want to be self-employed, you will then need a license to operate in your state. Then and only then will you need a license. Most PIs never apply for a license, they just work as an employee and they do not need a license to do that.
For example; the State of North Carolina says you must have 3 years of experience within the past 5 years to qualify for a license. It says nothing about obtaining a license if you are applying for your first job as an investigator. You DO NOT need one to work as an employee and you will not qualify for a license until you have the required years of experience.
At the moment there are 8 states that have no laws concerning a license. In those states anyone may open a business without any experience. We at GLOBAL strongly suggest you do not open such a business until you have some hands-on-experience. We can train you but to be truly successful as a PI you must have some working knowledge of what we teach you.
There are only 3 steps required to become a working Private Investigator
- Have a genuine desire to be one. You must already have that because you are reading this!
- Get the best training you can find. GLOBAL is where you get that.
- Find a job as an investigator and we show you how and where in Lesson 1.
I hope this clears up the confusion about who needs a private investigator license and when. Call me if you need more information.
